“We need to work hard in this life, but we also need to dream – artists are those who dream about society,” said Acting Mayor and Beacon Hill-Cyrville Coun. Michel Bellemare during the opening ceremonies on Thursday, June 18, joining others including Ottawa-Orléans MPP Phil McNeely, MP Royal Galipeau and other east-end councillors. “The arts breathe life into a community.”
Calling the 86,000-sq.-ft facility an “unprecedented” opportunity for cultural and economic transformation in the east end, he also pointed to future partnership possibilities and the ability to establish a hub for creative advancement.
“(The Shenkman Arts Centre) will be the centrepiece of the Orléans Town Centre development,” Bellemare added. “The completion of the (facility) is only its first step.”
The arts centre houses a 500-seat theatre, a 100-seat studio theatre, two art galleries and instructional and rehearsal spaces for visual, media and performing arts.
