As the debate about the interprovincial bridge continues, Mayor Larry O’Brien is coming out in support of the Kettle Island crossing.

“I think Kettle Island is the place to go,” O’Brien told east-end media on Thursday, Feb. 5. “There’s been a tremendous amount of pressure put on councillors from a lot of different sources but looking at other options I firmly believe Kettle Island is the place.”

He added that council has approved Kettle as an option subject to conditions.

The issue, however, is that the federal, Ontario and Quebec governments also have to make a decision, he indicated. “We (the city) have a chance to put our voice into it and we did with a solid vote in favour of Kettle Island,” O’Brien continued.

He noted that Kettle is a natural choice partly because there’s a “beautiful conduit” to the Aviation Parkway.

He went on to say that Ottawa is underserved when it comes to interprovinicial crossings. O’Brien explained that Saskatoon, a small city split in half by the Saskatchewan River, has eight bridges. “Ottawa needs more bridges,” he said, indicating there needs to be at least two crossings in the east end with another in the west at a “bare minimum.” A public discussion about the bridge issue is being held by Orléans Coun. Bob Monette’s office on Monday Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Orléans Theatre on 255 Centrum Blvd.
