"We were appalled by the lack of due process" that led to two sites at Lower Duck Island being included in the crossing study's next phase, explained Louis Caron, president of the newly-formed Common Sense Crossings, at a Tuesday, April 7 meeting.
Officially launched last month, the grassroots group has been working since January to raise awareness on what a bridge at either location could mean for the east-end community at large, he continued, as well as lobbying government officials and other stakeholders.
But with scores of other organizations cropping up for or against the proposed Kettle Island corridor – the hotly-debated consultants' recommendation for the future link – Caron stresses the focus of Common Sense Crossings remains on protecting the Greenbelt and its adjacent neighbourhoods.
"We're not saying Kettle Island is the best option; that's not our mandate," he explained, instead pointing to the economic, environmental, social and planning "costs" a crossing at either Lower Duck site would mean. "(Putting a bridge in the Greenbelt) would destroy what makes Ottawa the capital that it is."

New community group opposes Greenbelt bridge options
The two recently-added corridors in the future interprovincial crossing study will cause irreparable harm to the Greenbelt if included moving forward, says a new Convent Glen-based group created in opposition of the east-end bridge options.
