City staff are proposing rate hikes for ice time, pool rentals and hall and gym rentals along with numerous cuts to services and staffing levels in an attempt to balance the budget.
Councillors were presented with the draft 2009 budget on Tuesday, Nov. 4, which recommends increased fees as part of the solution to a $35-million shortfall.
Reports suggest recommendations include a 51 per cent hike for minor hockey arena rentals during prime time and a 10 per cent hike for adult hockey. A pool rental fee increase of 153 per cent for adults and 143 per cent for children as well as a 35 per cent jump in hall and gym rental fees.
This isn’t the first time hockey organizations have faced proposed rate hikes.
The 2008 draft budget initially called for rate increases to both adults and minors. The news sent some local sports associations and even Junior ‘A’ teams into a fury and prompted an online petition. In the end, adult ice rates at indoor rinks around the city rose to $210 per hour from $165. Prime-time fees for amateur sports organizations catering to youth, meanwhile, remained the same.
At the time, the City of Ottawa’s Barre Campbell said officials kept youth rates static to create a “happy medium” between the status quo and an across-the-board rate increase.
