Spring runoff throughout much of the Ottawa River basin is increasing rapidly due to recent warm temperatures. Continued warm weather is forecast for the next few days, which will lead to rising water levels in the Ottawa River and its tributaries.

The major storage reservoirs in the watershed are containing most of the increased runoff from the north, a release issued by the committee notes, but there is limited capability to deal with the runoff from the central part of the basin.

The committee will continuously monitor conditions at all points along the river and take all possible actions to limit the amount of flooding, the release states. Further bulletins will be issued if the situation changes.

Residents in Ottawa-Gatineau can get current information on the river’s water level by calling 819-994-7079 for a message in English or 819-994-7078 for a message in French. Information is also available at www.ottawariver.ca.

The Ottawa River Regulating Committee consists of the following agencies that operate dams in the river system: Public Works and Government Services Canada, Ontario Power Generation, Hydro-Quebec and the Ministry of Sustainable Development Environment and Parks Quebec.
