Christmas will be a little brighter for several area families this year thanks to the folks at the local Boston Pizza outlet who donated $1,095 to the Orleans-Cumberland Community Resource Centre (OCCRC) to help cover the costs of its Christmas program

The cheque was presented to the OCCRC by Orléans Boston Pizza owner Bob Tuttle, who explained that the money was raised by the restaurant's staff and customers and is over and above contributons made to the Boston Pizza Foundation.

"The Boston Pizza Foundation supports a number of national charities like Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Big Brothers, Big Sisters, but each location is also able to allocate some of that money to local charities and the Resource Centre is one of those local charities," said Tuttle.

The OCCRC provides food and presents to about 80 families and individuals who are facing financial hardship over the holiday season.

Boston Pizza community relations coordinator Margaux Wolfe said that the Resource Centre was an obvious organization to support because of the work they do in providing programs for youth and families.

"Boston Pizza does a lot in supporting organizations that have a tie in with children and youth," said Wolfe, "and the Resource Centre has a number of programs for youth, so it really fits into what Boston Pizza is all about."

The OCCRC food bank usually supplies families with about three to four days worth of food in times of emergency or family crisis. During the holiday season, however, they double that amount to cover a week. Toys and gifts are also given to families with children under the age of 16.

According to food bank co-ordinator Nicole Perras, Boston Pizza's contribution will be used to buy meat, eggs, milk and fresh produce. Some of it may also be used to purchase gift cards for families.

Members of the public interested in making a contribution to Christmas program can visit the OCCRC website at www.crcoc.ca/christmas-just- around-corner/, and download the Christmas Campaign 2016 Sponsor Registration Form. Simply fill it out and drop it off at the Resource Centre located at 240 Centrum Blvd. across from the Shenkman Arts Centre.
