Two-year-old Jérémie Audette was found face-down in the pool of a daycare provider just before 10:30 on Wednesday. He was rushed to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), where he was later pronounced dead.
The incident is currently under investigation, which the Ottawa Police say is standard procedure when a child under four dies in an accident.
According to the Lifesaving Society, young kids need to be accompanied by someone at all times when around water – meaning caregivers and parents must be in the pool with the child, not sitting nearby.
Tips for water safety:
Blocking access to pools that aren't in use
Wearing a lifejacket
Being cautious of hazards in the water
Giving your child swimming lessons
