Streams, ponds, rivers and lakes may look solid but can be dangerous, particularly for young children and family pets, as precipitation and fluctuating temperatures have resulted in higher than usual water levels and soft, slippery banks.
Emergency responders, including fire, police and paramedics, work closely to coordinate search and rescue efforts. Last winter, these agencies responded to 49 calls for help from persons in distress, lost or feared drowned.
The City of Ottawa and the Ottawa Drowning Prevention Coalition partners, including the Red Cross, Live Saving Society and other community agencies urge residents to stay off the ice.
