Can you make a difference in a senior’s life?  Can you have an impact that will affect someone for the rest of their lives?  Can you imagine being a senior yourself and needing help?  We have many clients that need your help and I am hoping that you will reach out if you can.

Interested in being a volunteer driver? Contact gdowning@eorc-creo.ca.

The Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre has a serious situation at the moment where we do not have enough volunteer drivers to take vulnerable seniors to essential appointments.  We never want to turn away requests from seniors for drives because we simply do not have enough volunteer drivers.

This should be an unacceptable situation for many reasons.  A community should never let this happen!  We should never let this happen!

Drivers can volunteer as often as they like.  All of our clients live within the Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre catchment’s area of Gloucester, Orleans and Cumberland.

The volunteer picks up the client at their home, takes them to the appointment and then drives the client back home.  We do pay mileage for the volunteer which is calculated from the volunteer’s home back to the volunteer’s home.

The volunteer never pays for parking.  Rides are usually booked at least one week in advance and the volunteer can accept or decline the ride in advance.

These drives are done during the weekday and the volunteer must have their own vehicle.  To compound our urgency for drivers we do have a number of our present volunteers that go away for the winter and that leaves us very thin on resources.

However, if you go away for the winter or not I would still like to talk to you!  We need drivers 12 months of the year!  Of course there is an application process.  We do require a police record check, a driver’s abstract and a copy of your insurance showing at least $2M liability.  The forms will be given to you and explained in the initial interview.

As part of a community and as an individual if you are able help please do.  If you know someone that could help please tell them about this urgent need.

As a community we should never have to turn away a senior that is in need.  As a centre the Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre NEVER wants to do this.

Please call me or email for more information.  Let’s talk so that you understand the volunteer role and there is no commitment required just to get information.  Please call me Gayle Downing Volunteer Development Coordinator at 613-741-6025 or gdowning@eorc-creo.ca.

Please help us to ensure that this situation does not continue and please help us to not let this situation escalate as we continue to be overwhelmed by the number of new clients needing our services.
