“Regretfully, my current professional commitments prevent me from seeking the nomination at this time,” Godbout said in a letter to Robert Houle, president of the Ottawa-Orléans Federal Liberal Association, on Friday, June 26.
In October, Orléans residents re-elected incumbent Conservative MP Royal Galipeau for a second term, winning 45 per cent of ballots cast with 27,000 votes. Godbout, meanwhile, finished in second place with 39 per cent, or almost 23,000 votes.
Looking ahead to the nomination meeting, Godbout expressed hopes party members would select a bilingual, loyal candidate with strong connections to ethnic communities and “a solid vision” for the east end.
“Orléans deserves a lot more than the meagre representation it currently receives,” he added. “Our riding will contribute to a Liberal victory and a majority government for Michael Ignatieff by returning a Liberal candidate to Ottawa-Orléans once again.”
