“We are very disappointed to read the paid advertisement by (McNeely) in a recent edition of the Now EMC,” read a statement released earlier today by Ottawa-Orléans MP Royal Galipeau and area councillors Rainer Bloess, Rob Jellett and Bob Monette, referring to a Friday, July 10 ad placed by the MPP that criticized municipal officials for not funnelling enough funding to the east end. “We believe that Mr. McNeely’s remarks in this advertisement and leading up to this publication are incorrect, unproductive and unwelcome as we strive to work together to on behalf of the east Ottawa communities.”
The group applauded recent efforts by the city, province and federal government to bolster local stimulus funding, pointing to projects including the widening of the Mer Bleue Road, St. Joseph Boulevard streetscaping, road upgrades and the Hunt Club Road extension that were slated for money.
McNeely, meanwhile, suggested that only three per cent worth of total funding was designated for the east end, compared to 54- and 34-per-cent portions divvied out elsewhere in the city, calling Orléans “short-changed” in the announcement.
“The opportunity seems to have passed us by,” he added, while Galipeau and city councillors suggested they “look forward to working with Mr. McNeely if he is prepared to do the same.”
