Team Canada won bronze at the July 5-17 competition in Birmingham, England, downing Australia 59-49 in the battle for third place this past Saturday.
The Canadians, featuring an almost entirely new lineup since the 2006 worlds, were the four-time defending champions at the event that is held only every four years.
The 49-year-old Benoit, who also owns three Paralympic gold medals, was the one constant face for Team Canada and again displayed her flair for big games by producing her highest point totals of the tournament in the playoff round.
Benoit scored 12 points in Canada’s 68-58 semi-final defeat against USA (the eventual world champs), and notched 14 points in the bronze medal match victory over Australia when the Canadians overcame a 10-point halftime deficit.
She also contributed 14 points in Canada’s three wins and a loss in the preliminary round. Canada’s next major international competition will be the 2011 qualifying tournament for the 2012 Paralympics in London.
