The City of Ottawa will host a one-day, electronic waste collection depot in the east end next weekend, in a bid to prevent hazardous substances from being diverted to landfills.
The depot – which is being held Saturday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Robert O. Pickard Environmental Centre Technical Services Building in Gloucester – will completely recycle all residential electronic waste collected.
Potential items include personal computers – as well as monitors, printers, keyboards and computer mice – televisions, VCRs, DVD players, video game systems and cell phones. Residents will be charged a recycling fee of $2 per most items, $10 per monitor and $15 for television sets, while computers will be accepted free of charge.
Members of the Centre de formation en enterprise et récupération (CFER) – a non-profit organization for teen and young adults learning job skills and work habits – will be on hand to disassemble the computer systems.
Electronic waste can also be accepted through the Ontario Electronic Stewardship program, via permanent and temporary depots. Old computers, meanwhile, can be returned year-round through Take it Back! retailers across the city.
