Time runs out on Biggs’ Olympic qualification quest

Team Canada’s Olympic alpine squad will officially be named tomorrow, but Biggs hasn’t quite kept pace with his fellow Canadian slalom teammates, who recently combined to produce the nation’s best-ever result in a slalom with four athletes in the top-15 on Sunday, Jan. 24. Biggs did not finish that course at the Kitzbühel, Austria World Cup.

Michael Janyk, Julien Cousineau and Brad Spence are virtual certainties to be selected, while the fourth and final remaining space could go to Trevor White or Ryan Semple, with Biggs remaining a long shot.

Coming off 21st- and 17th-place finishes on Dec. 21 in Italy and Jan. 6 in Croatia, the 27-year-old former Camp Fortune athlete was on the right track to securing an Olympic berth.

But Biggs did not crack the top-30 in his next race on Jan. 10, also tweaking a hip injury that lingered from a crash in training prior to the competition in Croatia. He did not finish his next three World Cup races – the final three of the qualification period to show Canadian coaches he deserved to be on the Olympic team.

Biggs is scheduled to race in the next World Cup slalom Sunday, Jan. 31 in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.
