A pair of east-end athletes played significant roles in last evening’s Capital Hoops Classic at Scotiabank Place, as the Carleton Ravens best the Ottawa Gee-Gees 74-66 in front of a crowd of 8,074.
Fourth-year Gee-Gees forward Louis Gauthier frequently matched up with rookie Ravens forward Tyson Hinz on both ends of the court.
While neither enjoyed a distinct advantage in their own battles, it was the younger Orléans player who enjoyed a bit of an edge on the scoresheet. Hinz scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds in 18 minutes of play compared to Gauthier’s three points and three rebounds in 22 minutes.
Hinz pronounced himself satisfied with his Capital Hoops debut, noting he enjoyed the great atmosphere with loud fans during the warm-up, but didn’t feel any different than usual once the game tipped off.
“I was surprised – I didn’t notice it,” the St. Matthew Catholic High School grad said. “There’s way too many things basketball-wise that you’ve got to think of, so you ignore anything else.”
Despite coming out on the losing end, Gauthier said it’s a “great feeling” to play in front of all the fans at the Classic.
“It’s pretty exciting, especially when you walk out and everyone’s around going nuts. It’s pretty fun,” noted Gauthier, a former Garneau high school student. “It would have been nice to win, but I’m sure it’ll come. (Carleton’s) our next challenge.”
The Ravens improved their season record to 14-1, with Ottawa remaining next on their tales at 12-3 atop the Ontario University Athletics East division.
