‘Bring it on,’ Monette tells potential rivals
The cafeteria at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School was packed last night as supporters for Orléans Coun. Bob Monette crowded in to officially kick-start his election campaign.
The event was set to host 200 but it quickly became evident more chairs were needed. Organizers estimate 300 showed up.
Monette, the first incumbent to register for the October election, indicated this will be his last run. In earlier interviews the councillor said he believes in term limits and will self-impose a two-term limit, noting the 2006 byelection he won doesn’t count because it wasn’t a full term.
Standing before a billboard that listed his accomplishments since 2006, Monette said it’s the community that has made it possible to work on both local and citywide issues. While he went through what he’s accomplished since coming to office, he also spoke to why he’s running again.
One of the reasons for seeking another term in council is the interprovincial bridge debate. Monette told his supporters Kettle Island is the only crossing for the people of Orléans, adding he’ll be sure to promote that location with the federal and provincial governments.
The evening also saw a number of endorsements from leaders within the community.
In the end, Monette noted the turnout to his campaign launch was “amazing.” And while no one else has yet registered to run in Orléans Ward, Monette had a warning for anyone looking to oust him from his seat.
“With support like this, all I can say is, ‘Bring it on, I look forward to the challenge.’”
