Devils climb back into National Ringette League Elite Eight
The Gloucester Devils’ charge up the standings has turned into a charge up the rankings, as the National Ringette League announced its Elite Eight today.
Gloucester came in at the No. 5 spot after previously being unranked.
A strong road trip against Toronto-area teams, where they won three-of-four games, followed by a pair of victories on home ice to start January provided the main reason why the Devils grabbed attention.
In the past two weekends, Gloucester split its games on road trips to Quebec City and Montreal.
“I think they’re playing a lot smarter as a group,” Devils coach Dave Mainwood said in a mid-January interview, noting his players are being more disciplined with the ring to maintain possession. “That’s really the biggest step they’ve taken.”
Rookie Allison Biewald continues to lead the team in scoring with 18 goals and 14 assists in 21 games. Not far behind are Samantha Morris (30 points), Ashley Rheaume (27 points), Natasha Côté (26 points), Allison Gabel (26 points) and Kristin Johnson (23 points).
Gloucester plays next on the road in Gatineau on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 9 p.m., and then comes back home to host Gatineau for a 4 p.m. contest on Feb. 14 at Potvin Arena.
The 13-9-1 Devils have eight games left in their regular season, which wraps up March 7. They’re currently in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. If they can maintain that position, they'll earn home-ice advantage in a playoff series, which will send its winner to the national championships.
