Pending environmental disaster must be addressed
Re: Should we really be so worried about carbon dioxide?, March 20
In response to Vernon Miller’s letter to the editor, while he may be surprised that alternative perspectives on the causes of global warming were not discussed in his granddaughter’s class, I was shocked at his suggestion that “real science is showing that man’s contribution is very small and becoming less so” and that Al Gore’s movie is a “most intriguing novel”.
I only recently viewed “An Inconvenient Truth”. The scientific evidence he presents is compelling and confirms all that I have read and heard for the last 25 years. In all that time, I have yet to see some “real science” to dispel the fact that mankind’s relentless use of fossil fuels, devastation of our natural resources, and over-population, is increasingly affecting our Earth’s climate.
It is no longer acceptable to attribute global warming solely to “natural cycles” or other causes. It’s like saying you are prone to asthma and bronchitis because of family history, and that your two-pack a day smoking habit has no significantly adverse affect on your breathing or health.
Just as I am sure that smoking is a killer habit, I am sure that we must assume our civic and moral responsibilities and act NOW to stop this pending environmental disaster.
Miller should instead encourage his granddaughter to “be green”, and take heart that the subject is being discussed at school and that it will help nurture a generation of environmentally responsible people.
