Decoding the media

The subject of the media raises several controversies because as youth, we are very susceptible and may believe most of what we see in television shows, movies, magazines, etc. Today, it seems as though stories of unfortunate events dominate the pages of newspapers and magazines, which send forth the message that only “the bad” exists in the world. In my opinion, the media is black and white where advantages and disadvantages are present; perhaps, there is a grey area we will soon discover.

I believe humans crave the media because it’s an easy access to the outside world and, while some stories are biased, they allow us to view the opinions of others, which we may or may not agree. In addition, not all stories published in the media reflect “the bad” but somehow, they are more evident to us teens. These days, reality shows have skyrocketed to a point where the names Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag have become household names.

Pondering upon the subject of the media reminded me of one day in class where we came up with the conclusion that “the good” exists in the world but only “the bad” is revealed. Therefore, it’s really up to us to stop visiting Perez Hilton’s website and truly watch the world unfold through our eyes and not others’. Finally, this article depicts what my opinions are about the media but who knows, I might be wrong.
